A semester-long project began with the prompt to choose one word at random. “Cathedral” was the word that I picked. Creating a mood board based on this word was my first assignment.
I was attached to the rich interiors of cathedrals, with warm colors and the soft textures of worn paper and upholstery contrasted with stone and glass.
Next we created a color palette for our fictional brand. I focused on the primary colors which I imagined when I thought of cathedrals. These were the saturated tones found primarily in stained glass, and the muted, natural colors that surrounded them.
The sample fashion line was curated from extensive sketching. I wanted to present a line with a focus on the contrast between unforgiving stone and opulent fabrics.
I was also interested in translating the severe Gothic architecture into a soft goods world. I imagined a heavily constructed jacket, with panels on the sleeves and back that would show religious scenes that mimicked stained glass windows.
