Upcycled Jacket

This project began in school for a course on sustainability. Our assignment was to create something new from an existing garment. I took several pairs of black jeans and converted them into a punk-inspired jacket.

I began by taking apart each pair of jeans meticulously and deliberately, taking the time to undo each seam. Some components were kept attached, like the pockets. I knew I wanted to place those in an asymmetrical fashion along the face of the garment, to create a chaotic appearance.

From there, I spent a lot of time to consider where each scrap would go to fill in the pattern pieces of a jacket block I created.

The final result is a grungy, chaotic jacket. It is patterned on an unstructured block, and features a combination of hand sewing and machine sewing. It is slim-fitting, and feels equal parts delicate and jagged.
